Club Description

Manchester City Football Club was founded in East Manchester in 1880 but only became known as Manchester City in 1894.

The Blues entered the top division for the first time in 1899 and claimed their first major trophy in 1904: the FA Cup. Captained by “Welsh Wizard” Billy Meredith, the Blues looked destined for a period of domination, but financial irregularities meant that seventeen players had to be released, among them the talismanic Meredith who moved across the city to Manchester United.

A fire at Hyde Road was a blessing in disguise as they built the “Wembley of the North” at Maine Road. The thirties proved to be a more fruitful decade for the club, reaching two consecutive FA Cup finals and winning the First Division title in 1937. Fans had to wait until the revolutionary tactical system dubbed “The Revie Plan” to lift silverware again, this time the FA Cup in 1957.

Under the guidance of Malcolm Allison the club enjoyed a long period of success before a period of decline in the late 70’s and 80’s. In the nineties, City were relegated to the third tier of English football, their lowest ebb.

Rejuvenation arrived with a new stadium, Eastlands. Since their move in 2003, City grew under the stewardship of Sven-Göran Eriksson and Mark Hughes. In August 2008, the club were bought by the Abu Dhabi Group and proceeded to smash all British transfer records with the purchases of top players such as Yaya Toure and Carlos Tevez.
